Why is foreign language education so important?

“…The U.S. is now the largest debtor nation in the history of the world…as parents and grandparents, we need to [realize that] the next 50 years is not going to be like the last 50 years in America, whether we like it or not. We are not going to control the world. So everyone should understand and be fluent in another language because we are going to have a lot of dealings with the rest of the world, and that will give you a leg up.  My daughters [8 and 3 years of age] speak Chinese (Mandarin)…..Spanish, Mandarin, maybe Portugese [would be practical to learn]…”Jim Rogers, Yale and Oxford educated Wall Street legend, Author, “A Gift to My Children”, June, 2011

Children's World Languages, Inc. is a Federally-designate501c3, private foreign language after-school academy for children.

Helping Connecticut families to provide the finest in educational opportunities, Children's World Languages offers a competitive Foreign Language curriculum specifically developed to enhance the Elementary School experience, and provide a foundation in a second language and culture for children as young as 4 years of age.

We offer two 10-week semesters (20 classes per semester) of elementary-level foreign language education, designed to introduce children to cultural differences, while promoting the amazing intellectual benefits that are known to come with early foreign language studies. In addition we offer Saturday "Early Years" classes for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade children.

Young minds are particularly adept at grasping (and retaining) foreign languages. Children's World Languages allows children to profit from this window of opportunity, giving them an advantage that otherwise would be lost.
We use traditional academic exercises along with song, repetition, games, arts and crafts, and cultural lessons to form a basis of language understanding. Instructors are all highly qualified classroom languages instructors. The curriculum has been custom-designed with the assistance of notable academic consultants. It presents students with a fun and challenging introduction to world languages and culture.

Early Foreign Language Studies have shown:

      • Higher Academic Performance - Early exposure to ForeignLanguage shows an advantage on all-around academic performance, including improved problem solving skills, and enhanced intellectual flexibility.
      • Higher Test Scores - Studies have repeatedly proven that students with 4 or more years of foreign language study perform an average of 140 points higher on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT, plus another almost 140 points higher on the Math portion, and an additional 150 points higher on the Writing portion of the SAT. (source: http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=4524)
      • Advanced Reading Skills - A study by York University of Canada suggests that multi-lingual children achieve superior reading skills, using their broader language skill set to apply knowledge to reading materials.
      • Improved Confidence - Young children have a unique “window of opportunity”, which allows them to quickly grasp and retain language information. As they get older, this window closes, and we have to work harder at acquiring language skills. Having a second language gives children a better understanding of their primary language, English, as well as a unique skill set that enables them to have the confidence to launch into a broader enthusiasm for learning.
      •  Broader Cultural Understanding - In today’s ever more Global community, our students will be better-equipped to participate in multi-cultural environments, and more willing to participate in the cultural experiences they will be presented with.
